LONG JUMP RULES

The Long Jump is an action of a single jump preceded by a run-up. The jump is made by the athlete placing the take-off foot on the mat and landing in the pit, usually on both feet.

  • An unsuccessful jump is when:
    • An athlete’s foot goes over the front edge of the take-off area.
    • The athlete after landing, walks back through the sand towards the take – off area.
    • Any sort of somersault is used.
    • An athlete approaching the take-off area, does not jump but swerves to one side and passes the back edge of the take-off area, the trial shall also be declared a foul.
  • In the event of an athlete stopping short of the back edge of the take-off area, then the athlete is entitled to repeat the run up without penalty.
  • Please raise the white flag for a successful put and the red flag if any breach occurs.
  • Chief Official – Stand in line with the front of the take-off board if possible (try and put your body between board and spectators). Watch the front of the board closely during the jump. Make a decision and raise the flag confidently.
  • Record all trials using tape and spike provided. A foul is not measured.
  • The sand in the landing pit and the take-off area must be levelled after each jump.

Measurement:

  • All jumps shall be measured from the nearest break in the landing area (made by any part of the body– this is where the spike is placed), to the front edge of the take-off board. The tape measure is then straightened and drawn tight, so it lays perpendicular (i.e., 90 degrees) to the take-off board or its extension.
  • The distance is measured to the nearest whole centimetre below the distance jumped. The zero end of the tape is placed where the athlete lands.
  • Ties broken by 2nd best performance for any places.
